Every Adventure Needs An Anthem....
Every adventure, every journey, every road trip, needs an ANTHEM. Or at least that's what happens in the movies. The heroes and heroines embark on their quest in a rousing blaze of emotive music that motivates them and creates excitment.
The kiddos and I thus decided that we needed an anthem of our own for Wandering Wednesday. We think we have found just the right song:
"Wake Me Up" by the Swedish band Avicii. Our new tradition is blaring this song as we start the engine and start our weekly wandering.
Why do we love this song?
Aside from the fact that Caden plays a mean "air keyboard" when it plays, the meaning behind the lyrics in so many ways captures what we are trying to accomplish with Wandering Wednesday.
Feeling my way through the darkness / Guided by a beating heart / I can’t tell where the journey will end / But I know where to start / They tell me I’m too young to understand / They say I’m caught up in a dream / Well life will pass me by if I don’t open up my eyes / Well that’s fine by me.
Per Avicii: "The lyrics celebrate the fact that life is a journey and not just the destination, and that sometimes, throwing caution to the wind is the best thing you can do. There’s nothing wrong with being a dreamer, because dreams can and do come true. And despite what some may say, dreaming is not a waste of time. Also, sometimes, you learn the most and find out who you really are when you didn’t even know you were looking. We are essentially singing about experiences making you who you are. The only way to know life is to live it."

Not afraid to close my eyes (meaning to dream) Life's a game made for everyone/ And love is the prize.
Every time we wander, we throw caution to the wind. We set out as explorers, as anthropologists, and as dreamers. I hope when my kids look back on all of this, they agree that these experiences made them who they are. Most importantly, I hope that they take away that life is truly what you make of it and that you have to seize each and every day. And that without a doubt, LOVE is the prize.
Avicill sings that in dreaming, "I did not know I was lost." Meaning, the road less travelled often yields the greatest insights.
Of course, we already believe in our hearts that "Not all who wander are lost." Here's an idea... How about we all start a movement together?? A Wandering Wednesday movement! We already have a motivational anthem!
